Grease a 9x13-inch cake pan with solid vegetable shortening. Preheat the oven to 350℉
Brown the butter and let it cool
Melt the chocolate and let it cool but don't let it harden.
Sift then measure 2 cups of all-purpose flour. Add the pudding mix, baking powder, and salt to the flour.
In the bowl of an electric mixer or hand mixer, beat the butter, brown sugar, and butterscotch together for about 2 minutes on medium. Stop the mixer and scrape the bowl, mix again.
Add the eggs and beat until incorporated.
Alternate adding the flour mixture and cream soda, starting an ending with the flour. Stop the mixture and scrape the bowl. Mix again.
Add the vanilla and butter extracts and combine.
Remove the bowl from the stand, add the apples, and stir them in by hand.
Pour the batter into your prepared pan and bake at 350℉ for 30 to 35 minutes. Start checking for about 25 minutes. Test doneness with a cake tester or wood pick.
