VIDALIA ONION PIE RECIPE

This savory Vidalia Onion Pie Recipe has layers of onions, milk, eggs, and cheese. This classic Southern recipe has a nice mild onion flavor and makes a delicious side dish.

If you like Vidalia onions, you’ll love this easy side dish recipe. Even if you don’t like Vidalia onions, chances are you’ll still like this savory pie. It’s made with Vidalia onions that have been cooked down and topped with cheese all in a buttery pie crust!

You may be looking at the photos (especially the photo of the whole pie below) thinking to yourself ‘that’s a quiche’. No, this recipe has just enough milk and eggs to hold the onions together in the pie. Whereas a quiche has mostly eggs and milk for the filling, this pie has mostly onions as the filling.

There are four main components to the pie.

  1. Pie crust – I bought a premade regular pie crust. You can also make the crust. I have a Coconut Oil Pie Crust and a Never Fail Pie Crust Recipe.
  2. Next, the onions – I recommend Vidalia onions or another sweet onion. Vidalia onions are sweet when they’re raw and dooking them increases that sweetness even more. You’ll want to cook them down so that they’re soft and just beginning to caramelize.
  3. Milk, eggs, and seasoning – The milk and eggs hold everything together while salt, pepper, and red pepper add just the right amount of flavor. You can add a dash of hot sauce if you like spicy foods.
  4. Cheese – I like the combination of cheddar and Monterrey. However, Havarti, pepper jack, brie, just about any cheese would be good.

Vidalia Onion Pie Recipe

This is a straight forward recipe. Really the only tip for success that I have is regarding this recipe is preventing the crust from becoming soggy. Therefore, I do recommend that you blind bake the crust. That means to bake in without the filling for 6 to 8 minutes or until its lightly browned. As well, after cooking the onions move them to a paper towel-lined plate with a slotted spoon. Allow them to rest on the plate a few minutes to give them time to drain any excess moisture and oil.

  • Prebake your pie crust in a 350°F oven for 7 minutes.
  • In a large skillet, saute Vidalia onions in 2 tablespoons of butter until soft and clear. Remove from the skillet and drain them on a paper towel-lined tray.
  • While the onions are draining, beat milk, eggs, salt, paprika, and pepper together.
  • Place the onions in the pie crust and pour the milk/egg mixture over the onions. Top with shredded cheese.
  • Bake in a 350°F oven for 30 to 35 minutes or until the center is firm and the cheese is melted and lightly browned.

    I made this and it was delicious. I made the crust. It was the vegetable oil no roll crust. I also used only cheddar cheese shreds. It was also great reheated by single slice in microwave for 30 seconds. Can’t wait to make it for visiting family and friends.

  2. This recipe was printed in Southern Living years ago using a saltine cracker crust which is great. I have made this recipe many times.
