Ingredient Substitutions

  1. For the bread, you can use any large loaf of unsliced bread. Italian and sourdough bread are good replacements.
  2. You can use turkey or chicken sausage.
  3. You can omit or use more cream cheese if you want. My family doesn’t love it so I used just enough to hold the sausage together. I don’t recommend using low-fat or fat-free sour cream.
  4. Since this isn’t a ‘baking’ recipe, you can adjust the eggs to your liking. If you like eggs, use more. If not, omit or use less.
  5. Regarding the seasonings… I’m not a fan of garlic in breakfast recipes. However, you can add 1/4 teaspoon of garlic powder if you want.
  6. Not a fan of spice? Substitute pepperoncini peppers or bell peppers for the jalapenos.
  7. Of course, any melty cheese will work. Monterrey, Pepper Jack, Colby, and Havarti are all good.

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 375โ„‰.
  • With a sharp, serrated knife, slice the top 1/3 of the bread off. Using your fingers, hollow out the entire loaf of bread leaving a 1-inch shell. (Keep the bread you remove for croutons or breadcrumbs.)
  • Cook the sausage and drain. While it's hot, mix it with the cream cheese. Spoon the sausage mixture into your bread.
  • Beat the eggs with the black pepper, red pepper, and onion powder. Soft scramble them then spoon on top of the sausage.
  • Evenly distribute the diced jalapenos over the eggs.
  • Place the cheese slices over the eggs.
  • Cook until the cheese is melted and begins to bubble.
  • Remove the bread boat from the oven, slice, and serve. (My boys like to drizzle with maple syrup.)
