Cozy in a cup, Salted Caramel Hot Toddy Cocktail

A Hot Toddy is a warm and comforting alcoholic beverage traditionally made with whiskey, honey, lemon juice, and hot water. However, my version has Knucklenoggin Salted Caramel Whiskey, apple cider, honey, and lemon juice.

HISTORY OF THE HOT TODDY

As with many old recipes that were written until modern times, there are several theories of how the Hot Toddy was developed.

  1. One theory is it started in British-controlled India. In the 1610s, dictionary.com notes, the Hindi word โ€œtaddyโ€ meant โ€œbeverage made from fermented palm sap.โ€
  2. The British passed this on in their cold homeland of England and Scotland and claimed the concoction as their own.
  3. Still another theory states that 18th-century Scottish doctors prescribed them so that it would cover up the strong taste of raw whisky or aid with sickness from the common cold.

Likely, the truth lies in a combination of those tales.

DOES A HOT TODDY CURE COLDS?

People have used the Hot Toddy as a natural remedy for easing the aches and pains of a common cold for decades. For the most part, in the age of modern medicine, it was assumed that it was one of those home remedies that worked because we thought it worked (placebo effect). However, a Hot Toddy is actually pretty great, from a scientific perspective, at soothing your cold. The Mayo Clinic recently confirmed that โ€œwarm liquids can be soothing and help ease congestionโ€. Alcohol is a great decongestant it dilates the blood vessels, making it easier for your mucus membranes to deal with the infection.
