Memphis Blues Martini

What is a martini?

The martini is a cocktail made with gin and vermouth and garnished with an olive or a lemon twist. Over the years, the martini has become one of the best-known mixed alcoholic beverages. H. L. Mencken called the martini “the only American invention as perfect as the sonnet”.

Vermouth is a type of wine that’s flavored with botanicals, and can make a martini “dry” or “sweet.” A martini usually calls for a splash of dry vermouth, which is known for its more bitter and less-sugary taste.

The modern-day martini, like many other classic cocktails, comes in many variations. However, there is one constant. The martini remains (mostly) 4 ounces of two or more types of alcohol.

This is a restaurant remake of a popular cocktail from the Peabody Hotel in Memphis. It’s aptly named Memphis Blues Martini.

The first time I had this amazing cocktail it was August and a blazing 140 degrees outside. After all, Memphis is in the deep South! Okay, okay, maybe that is a slight exaggeration, but it was impossibly hot. And this cool, refreshing martini was just what I needed.

I love this cocktail. They go down fast. Maybe too fast!

This martini has vodka, blue curacao, and Blueberry Schnapps. The beautiful color comes from blue curacao. I think it would make a fun fishbowl drink to serve a crowd! Don’t you?

We’ve been serving this Memphis Blues Martini from The Peabody at our annual martini parties since then. It’s always popular and not overly sweet therefore men like it, but it’s just sweet enough that ladies like it too. It’s a win-win!

      2 1/2 ounces gin
      1/2 ounce dry vermouth
Garnish: 1 or 3 olives or a lemon twist
โ€‹1 dash orange or Angostura bitters
