๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿปโ€๐Ÿณ How to make

Preheat oven to 350F. In a large mixing bowl, combine butter, sugar, flour, eggs and vanilla. Mix well. Add chocolate chips and nuts and mix until well blended. Spoon into pie crust. Bake for 1 to -1 1/2 hours or until a knife inserted in the middle comes out clean. If it is still runny after you take it out, just pop it back in and keep cooking, it will come together. Let cool for 10 minutes or longer for a firmer texture before serving.

๐Ÿฅ˜ Tips and notes

  • Use Room Temperature Ingredients: When making Kentucky Derby Pie, it helps to use room temperature eggs and butter. This ensures the ingredients mix well, creating a smooth filling.
  • Don’t Overfill the Pie Shell: When pouring the filling into the pie shell, make sure to leave a little space at the top. This prevents the filling from bubbling over as it bakes.
  • Check for Doneness: To know when the pie is done, look for a golden-brown crust and a set filling. The center will jiggle slightly. If the edges are browning too quickly, you can cover them with foil to prevent burning.
  • Let It Cool Before Slicing: Allow the pie to cool completely before slicing. This helps the filling set, making it easier to cut and serve clean slices.

โ“Kentucky Derby Pie FAQ

Can I make Kentucky Derby Pie ahead of time?
Yes, you can make it a day ahead. Store it at room temperature if you plan to serve it within a day. Otherwise, refrigerate it and bring it to room temperature before serving.

What if I donโ€™t have pecans?
You can substitute pecans with walnuts if you prefer. They will give a slightly different taste but still work well with the chocolate.

Can I omit bourbon?
Absolutely! A tablespoon of bourbon adds a nice depth of flavor to the pie. Itโ€™s optional but recommended if you enjoy a hint of bourbon.

How should I store leftover pie?
Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to two days or in the refrigerator for up to five days. Just make sure the pie is completely cooled before storing to maintain its texture.

Can I freeze Kentucky Derby Pie?
Yes, this pie freezes well. Wrap it tightly in plastic wrap and then in foil, or use an airtight container. It can be frozen for up to three months. Thaw in the refrigerator overnight before serving.
