HAMBURGER STEAK WITH ONIONS AND BROWN GRAVY RECIPE
After trying this for the first time, Lincoln exclaimed, “This tastes like a hamburger!”
I couldn’t help but giggle. He loves a grilled hamburger if he helps make it. The gravy on this Hamburger Steak was almost more than he could handle, but he did eat most of it. We struggle with his eating, but he is getting better.
One of my all-time favorite entrees, especially when I was young, was a Hamburger Steak. As I got older and my tastes developed more I started making a Hamburger Steak with Onions and Brown Gravy Recipe. I remember going to a local restaurant that was known for its high-quality steaks. I got a hamburger steak. Everyone at my party gave me strange looks. But the gravy! You can’t get good brown gravy with a grilled ribeye!
Nowadays, I don’t order something at a restaurant that I make at home. And when it’s economical to make, when it’s quick to make and when the whole family eats it, I’ll be making it at home that’s for sure!
ARE HAMBURGER STEAK AND SALISBURY STEAK THE SAME THING?
They are very similar. However, Salisbury steak contains more fillers such as breadcrumbs, minced onions, and eggs. Typically, hamburger steak contains just hamburger meat and spices.

This is my kind of comfort food! So easy and delish and that gravy! Oh my!
We had this dish for dinner today, and it was delicious! The only change I made was that, because my burgers were frozen, I cooked them on my indoor grill. Then, I scraped all the drippings into the frying pan, and went from there. I added a pinch of Montreal Seasoning, too. I also served it with rice; real comfort food! Yum!
Would have preferred the cook time listed as 20 minutes be updated to reflect the actual cook time as described in the narrative.
It’s supposed to calculate that automatically. I corrected it.
Do you use all purpose or self rising flour?
all-purpose
We had this tonight with mashed potatoes and a side of peas. The only change I made to the recipe was increasing the amount of garlic. So good. I’ll be making it again.
I used a beef base concentrate with 2 1/2 cups water. Turned out extremely flavorful and delicious! Didn’t want hamburgers, and thought I’d try something I never cooked before. Put a patty over sticky rice, and topped with the gravy and some scallions. Very close to loco moco (Hawaiian dish), without the fried egg. Will definitely make this again.
Make sure to drain most of the grease after you’ve sautéed your onion and garlic and before adding in the flour. Yum!
Tried this tonight. I didn’t have any Worcestershire left, so I mixed A1 into the meat. Turned out great 🙂
My SO and I loved it!
This was amazing. Brown gravy was originally thin, package is thicker, just add more flour if you want. But the flavor was perfect. I don’t measure anything though.
I tried this recepie tonight and I guess I am doing something wrong because it was not flavorful at all! I usually add a little Montreal steak seasoning to my beef before I cook it, but left it out this time to see if my husband might like it better. I followed to a “T” and my gravy was very thin and tasted like water!
Can I cook them in the oven as there will be more then 6 maybe 12 ?
I prefer pan cooked to get that ‘crust’ on the outside
