Ground turkey is available all year. Since it can be bland, I wanted to spruce it up. I needed something simple, quick, and family-friendly for dinner, and this dish was perfect.

Whatโ€™s in Green Bean Ground Turkey Casserole?

This one-pot skillet meal combines the flavors of green bean casserole with easy ground turkey. Itโ€™s a great choice for a busy weeknight and a heartier version of traditional green bean casserole. With just five ingredientsโ€”ground turkey, canned green beans, condensed cream of mushroom soup with garlic, milk, and Frenchโ€™s fried onion stripsโ€”this dish is a winner!

Is condensed mushroom soup the same as cream of mushroom?

Yes and no. This recipe calls for cream of mushroom soup with garlic. Condensed soups of any variety are like purchasing the soup, but in roux form. They are thicker and often have a more concentrated amount of flavorings, and require the addition of milk or chicken broth to make it into a soup you would consume for lunch. The use of condensed soup here is important so as not to turn our skillet into a watery mess.

Can I substitute cream of celery for cream of mushroom?

It will alter the taste, but if you have a condensed cream of celery and a can of mushrooms or fresh mushrooms to be chopped, this is an easy substitution. Condensed cream of chicken will have some delicious flavors as well, though not like that of cream of mushroom. Choose your “cream of…” wisely.

How to make Ground Turkey Green Bean Casserole

  1. Mix the condensed cream of mushroom with milk and whisk.
  2. Brown your ground turkey in a 10-inch skillet.
  3. Add the drained, canned green beans and soup mixture to the skillet. Mix and allow to cook over medium heat until thick, like gravy.
  4. Add fried onion strips and place in the oven for 5 minutes. Just long enough to crisp the top. You can do this under a broiler since the rest of the casserole is cooked. Garnish with fresh sage, parsley, or thyme, and serve.

Should a casserole be watery?

The casserole will have some liquid, even using drained, canned green beans. However, if you find the casserole is not thickening up nicely as you would like, heat over medium to allow moisture to evaporate before adding the crunchy fried onion strips. Your casserole should be the perfect consistency before adding your onion strips since, after that step, there is no turning back.
