Egg in a Hole Grilled Cheese is a simple breakfast sandwich recipe that takes minutes to cook, tastes amazing, and guarantees you’ll have a great day!
WHAT THE HECK IS EGG IN A HOLE?
Egg in a hole is a breakfast recipe. You cut a hole in a slice of bread. While the bread is toasting in the pan, you break an egg into the hole and allow it to cook in the ‘hole’ in the bread. Other names for the dish include “bullseye eggs”, “eggs in a frame”, “gashouse eggs”, “gasthaus eggs”, “hole in one”, “one-eyed Jack”, “one-eyed Pete”, “pirate’s eye” and “popeye”. Actually, there are more than 66 names for this dish!
I took this iconic breakfast one step further and made it into an Egg in a Hole Grilled Cheese! Yummy-yum!
I watched a lot of videos, read many recipes, and tried different techniques to give you a fail-proof way to make this sandwich. The easiest way by far is to add the egg in one slice of bread instead of both (and this way you can ‘almost’ eat it with your hands). As I said, there are almost as many different ways to make the sandwich as there is for the name of it!
INGREDIENTS AND TIPS
- Nonstick pan. I highly recommend a nonstick pan with a lid. Preferably the pan will be large enough to cook both slices of bread at the same time. (Note: I actually cooked the sandwich in the photos in another pan, styled it, and photographed it in the light pan shown. Only because this pan looks better in photographs.)
- Bread. I used Dave’s Killer Bread the Powerseed variety. It’s hearty and healthy. Thick bread slices work better in this recipe, but you can use any bread you want.
- Butter. You can use any
butter or margarine in this recipe. Just don’t allow your pan to get too hot so it doesn’t scorch thebutter . - Cheese. I went with the classic cheddar cheese but you can use any kind of cheese or whatever kind you have in the fridge.
- Salt, Pepper, Sriracha. Feel free to season your sandwich and egg with any seasonings you prefer or none at all. As well, add avocado and/or bacon to amp up the flavor even more.
- Fork, Knife, Napkin. This is a messy sandwich. You’ll want to eat it with a fork and knife and have several napkins close by!
HOW DO YOU MAKE EGG IN A HOLE GRILLED CHEESE?
- Get all of your ingredients, utensils, pan (plus lid), and plate out before you start.
- Crack the egg into a small bowl.
- Turn the stove on to medium-low. If it’s too hot it will burn the
butter or cook the toast before the egg is cooked. - Butter one side of each slice of bread. Cut a hole out of one slice of bread. Keep the hole and toast it too.
- Place each slice of bread buttered side down in the skillet. You want to hear a ‘light’ sizzle.
- While the bread is browning,
butter the top side of the bread. Allow it to toast until lightly brown. If you can remember to watch the clock for how long it takes to brown, it’ll help when you cook the other side and the egg. - Remove the slice of bread with the hole in it momentarily.
- Turn the slice of bread that’s still in the pan (as well as the hole) and quickly put cheese on it.
- Return the slice of bread with the hole to the pan, press it down so that the egg doesn’t seep under it and slide the egg out of the bowl and into the hole. Keep holding the bread for a couple of seconds for the egg to set.
- Place the lid on the pan and allow it to cook until the bread is toasted and the egg is cooked to your likely. This is the tricky part. This is where it’s helpful if you watched the clock for the first side cooking. You may have to lift the lid to check it for doneness and that’s okay.
- Remove your sandwich from the pan and season with salt and pepper.
