My boys love this Sausage Roll. We have it for breakfast, for snack, and for dinner. It’s that good and more importantly for me, it’s easy.

I don’t know whether you’re familiar with Boy Scouts are not, but the scouts work on different skill sets to get badges and ultimately move up in rank. Lincoln has been a Boy Scout almost three years and he just earned his Cooking Merit Badge. I think they have to cook at campouts 7 or 9 times. It’s a heck of a lot of times, whatever it is.

Choosing your cast iron

Choosing cast iron doesnโ€™t have to be intimidating. It will be useful in many ways, especially in a Dutch oven.

Even if youโ€™re just a beginner, there is no reason to shy away. We recommend starting with an enameled Dutch oven, which offers the benefits of easier cleaning and maintenance. Le Creuset makes our Dutch oven of choice. It offers the cast iron benefits we desire, such as even heat, and you can wash with soap like other dishes. If youโ€™re unsure why that fact is magical, traditional cast iron is not soap-friendly and can strip the seasoning.

If you are using your Dutch oven primarily on campfires, you’ll want one a differently designed Dutch oven. The best design to use camping has a flanged lid that holds hot coals and inverts for use as a griddle, legs so it’ll set steady on the fire, and a medal handle to hang over a fire. I recommend these two Lodge Dutch ovens: the 8-quart Dutch oven and the 5-quart Dutch oven.

Below are my recommendations for cast iron Dutch ovens.

Sausage Breakfast Pinwheels Dutch oven tips

  1. Light the coals so that they will be hot and ready when you get the sausage roll ready.
  2. Spray the inside of a large Dutch oven with non-stick spray.
  3. Prepare the roll as directed below.
  4. Evenly distribute the charcoal briquettes on top and bottom of the Dutch oven.
  5. Open the lid as few of times as possible to hold the heat in.

Instructions

  • Line the inside of the Dutch oven with heavy duty foil.
  • You’ll need 26 charcoal bricks for this. 10 for the bottom, 16 for the lid.
  • This will get the temperature to approximately 350 degrees.
  • Roll out one pizza crust and cut twelve 3-inch rounds with a cookie cutter.
  • Cook sausage in a large skillet until it’s no longer pink. Remove from pan and drain on a paper towel.
  • Roll another pizza crust out and layer with sausage and cheese.
  • Roll up jelly roll style beginning with the long side.
  • Pinch to close.
  • Cut into 12 even slices.
  • Place 3-inch dough on the bottom side of the pinwheel (so that the sausage and cheese don’t fall out) and place on foil in Dutch oven. (see photo above)
  • Continue with all the rolls.
  • Place lid on Dutch oven and place oven on the fire.
  • Cook at 350 (10 coals on bottom and 16 coals on top. We added extra because it was 30 degrees outside on the day we try this recipe) for about 30 minutes.
  • Check often the last 5 minutes so as to not over cook.
  • Serve immediately.
  • Optional – serve with maple syrup.

If you line the Dutch Oven with foil or use a liner, no need to use the spray. I would use a light coat of vegetable oil vs the cooking spray, helps to keep the cast iron seasoned and non-stick

Canโ€™t wait to try this while camping! Do you need the aluminum foil? The pictures donโ€™t show it.

  5. I had no idea there was such a thing as a sausage. This looks amazing!
