Chocolate Covered Strawberries
When I recently went into a candy store, I was surprised and shocked at the price of Chocolate Covered Strawberries. Strawberries and chocolate are neither that expensive. And labor, well, it takes about 2 minutes to dip those babies, that’s it! It actually takes longer for them to dry than it does to dip. Anyone can make these and you don’t have to spend a fortune to have this gourmet treat.
First, review my tips on How to Melt Chocolate. Next, make these gourmet specialties for yourself or they make a decadent gift!
What kind of chocolate do I use?
As far as the type of chocolate, it is entirely your preference:ย semi-sweet, milk, white, bittersweet, etc., or a combination (for example 4 oz white, 4 oz. semi-sweet.) However, since there are basically two ingredients I recommend premium chocolate like this.
Furthermore, I recommend using baking chocolate, not chocolate chips. Baking chocolate is pure chocolate without any added ingredients and therefore tastes superior but more importantly, it melts and coats much better for our purposes.
How to make Chocolate Covered Strawberries
- Choose strawberries that are bright red with little or no white at the top and no bruises.
- Wash and dry your strawberries very well. They need to be completely dry before dipping them in the chocolate. Any moisture will cause the chocolate to seize and turn lumpy and solidify.
- Prep your workplace and toppings. Once your chocolate is melted there should be no time between dipping, coating, and place to dry. Line your countertop with parchment paper now. Get any additional toppings like nuts or sprinkles ready.
- Re-read my post How to Melt Chocolate.
- Now, dip your strawberries. Work with just one strawberry at a time. Hold the strawberry by the green stem and dip it in the chocolate. Turn to coat the strawberry all over. Lift the strawberry out of the chocolate and let any excess drain off.
- If you want to add another layer do it now. Roll the chocolate in nuts, etc. then place it on the parchment paper to dry. Or, if you’re not adding another layer, place the Chocolate Covered Strawberry on the parchment paper to dry.
Adding extras!
After dipping your strawberries in chocolate, consider adding any of these.
- Chopped peanuts, pistachios, pecans, walnuts, or almonds
- Toasted coconut
- Sprinkles
- Mini chocolate chips
- Crushed Oreo or any cookie crumbs
- Any crushed candy, peppermint would be lovely for Christmas
- Chocolate shavings
- White chocolate drizzle
The dipped strawberries do not have to be refrigerated. They’re best served the same day as they’re made or within 24 hours. Store them in a cool place, but not the refrigerator.
