Bushwacker Cocktail is creamy, chocolatey, and sweet. In addition to that wonderful chocolate and rum, this frozen drink recipe contains Kahlua, ice cream, and milk making it the ultimate adult milkshake!

Bushwacker Cocktail recipe - a creamy adult milkshake

We go to the beach every year on vacation. We either visit the Florida coast or the Alabama coast. Orange Beach, AL restaurants love to serve this cocktail. Understandably, it’s cool, smooth, and refreshing. It’s one of my very favorite drinks and apparently it’s a lot of other people’s favorite as well.

Bushwacker Cocktail

You may not have ever heard of this drink. I don’t see them on menus except on the Gulf of Mexico region. “Imagine mixing the most luscious milkshake with the boozy benefits of a good mixed drink.” That my friend is what you have in the drink.

The Bushwacker is a cocktail invented in 1975 at the Ship’s Store, Sapphire Pub at Sapphire Village in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands.

It is similar to a creamy, chocolate piña colada. However, instead of citrusy notes from coconut and pineapple, Bushwackers have chocolate and coffee flavor profiles. It’s a decadent concoction. And, it’s dangerously potent.

Many restaurants offer a rum shooter on top. Trust me, you don’t need it!

Is it a cocktail or a milkshake?

It’s both. And, there are many variations and a long list of ingredients.

Kahlua and rum are mainstays, but some bartenders mix things up with vodka and bourbon. Irish cream, crème de cacao, cream of coconut, and triple sec make appearances in some recipes. As well, you can use ice cream, ice cubes, milk, or half and half for the frozen ingredient.

You’ll want to whirl up the ingredients in a blender and finish with whipped cream and maraschino cherries.

Some bars and restaurants serve their Bushwackers thick and spoonable, like a Wendy’s Frosty or blended ice cream. For others, the consistency is closer to a milky slushy and entirely sippable.

There are as many variations on the Bushwacker as there are bars, and they’re as unique as the creative minds who put them together.

This is a fantastic shaker set with a muddler and shot glass for cocktail making.
