Boy Scout Snack Mix is crunchy, spicy and completely irresistible!
This Boy Scout Snack Mix is a great snack for active boys. It’s easy to make. If fact, they can easily make it themselves.
Boy Scout Snack Mix is full of crunchy, crispy crackers and chips, hearty nuts and lots of spice.
Make your own snack mix and save money. Also, it’s highly adaptable to your taste. If you don’t like pretzels, add more cheese crackers or Chex cereal. I used Bugels, cheese crackers, peanut, almonds and more of my favorites.
This makes a great party snack, camping snack, or gift.
How to make Boy Scout Snack Mix
- This mix cooks in a low oven. You’ll want to preheat it to 225ยฐF.
- First, combine all the Bugles, crackers, nuts, oyster crackers, and pretzels in a large bowl.
- Next, in another microwave-safe bowl combine the oil, ranch, and chili powder. Heat this mixture in the microwave for 1 minute. Now, give it a whisk.
- Pour oil mixture over crackers and stir to coat all the crackers really good.
- Spread the crackers evenly on a sheet tray.
- Bake for 60 minutes at 225ยฐF. You’ll want to stir the snack mix every 15 minutes so that it doesn’t get too brown on one side.
- When you remove it from the oven, it’s ready to serve.
- If you’re going to be serving it later, cool the snack mix completely before storing in an airtight container.
Is there an alternate method to make this recipe?
Yes!! You can cook this snack mix on a grill.
Mix the ingredients per the instructions provided. For the grill, you’ll want to close the top of the grill and use a low flame. Stir often. Depending on grill temperature, cook 45 to 60 minutes.
For cooking on the grill, I like to use theseย disposable pans.

Is it possible to use taco seasoning packets instead of ranch? We donโt care for Ranch.
Margie
Yes, you can. You can sub any flavor seasonings you like.
Can you leave out the chili powder out ? My son and I can’t handle anything spicy.
yes, you can
How long can this be stored for?
In an airtight container about 1 week.
Is it 1-7oz box of cheese crackers? The recipe says 7 oz boxes??
Yes, one 7-ounce box of cheese crackers
I could not stay out of this mix! I’m not a big fan of pretzels, so I decided to substitute them with crunchy Cheetos. Amazing! I will definitely be making this again.
I’m the same way with this mix. I love your addition of the Cheetos!
Very good
Can another oil be used besides popcorn oil?
Yes, any oil but it won’t be quite as flavorful
What is in popcorn oil and what oil is it? I have to watch for food allergies in my family. I usually use olive oil for everything, but I am curious about this oil. I like the idea of the bugles for cornucopias and the oyster crackers since the pilgrims might have eaten oysters, we can’t do peanuts so I might sub-walnuts instead. I will have to check the seasoning packets, the ranch might have milk it it. I can make my own seasoning if needed or just use the chili powder.
Orville Redenbachers popcorn oil is the best ever!!
I apologize for being dense, lol, but when you say popcorn oil are you meaning a buttery type oil or canola, corn, safflower? I make marinated pretzels and use canola oil. This sounds like a perfect snack mix!
Yes, usually if you cannot find popcorn oil with the other oil on the baking isle of the store, it will be on the popcorn isle. It’s more ‘buttery’ than other oils
I saw one brand of popcorn oil and it is Orvil Redenbacher, and it says it is soybean oil and artificial ingredients and color. I have to wonder how that can taste good. Is that the stuff you use?
Yes, this is what I use> https://amzn.to/3i1UG0Y. It gives the snack mix so much flavor.
Any of the words that are blue you can click on and see what I used.
This is the only recipe I use popcorn oil/butter in. You could probably test other butter-flavored oils – I am leaning toward healthier ingredients using olive, coconut, and avocado oil in my recipes now. However, this is one of the first recipes I posted on my site and the traditional way I made it. I haven’t gone back and retested it with other ingredients.
Love snack mix! Yum!
