What is Baked Oatmeal?

Baked oatmeal is a warm breakfast casserole that uses only a handful of staple kitchen ingredients to create a bread pudding-like dish that is chewy, soft, and creamy on the inside and crunchy with texture on top. Baked oatmeal can easily be customized with whatever add-ins you have on hand, from fresh or frozen berries to chocolate chips. One of the best things about baked oatmeal is just how fast and simple it is to make. With just 5 minutes of prep and 30 minutes of baking, you can prep this in the morning the same time as your coffee.

Apple Cinnamon Baked Oatmeal Ingredients

  • Oats – whole (do not use steel cut or quick oats for this recipe)
  • Apples
  • Baking Soda
  • Salt
  • Cinnamon
  • Oil – vegetable or melted coconut
  • White sugar
  • Brown sugar
  • Eggs
  • Milk
  • Vanilla Extract
  • Caramel Sauce – optional

How to Make Baked Oatmeal

Start by mixing the oil, sugars, and eggs in a large bowl. Add the remaining ingredients. Pour into a well-greased skillet and bake covered with tinfoil for 20 minutes, removing the tinfoil for the last 10 minutes.

Let the oatmeal sit for 10 minutes before serving, and then serve in a bowl with milk, drizzled with caramel sauce, honey, or maple syrup.

Make-Ahead Tip

Making this the night before? Combine all ingredients and cover with plastic wrap before placing the bowl in the refrigerator over night. In the morning scoop the contents into a skillet and cover with tinfoil. You may find the baking time is less with this method as most of the liquid is already absorbed by the oats. Check the breakfast casserole at 15 minutes and each 5 minutes after until your desired doneness is reached. Look for the edges to be crisping.

Storing Apple Cinnamon Baked Oatmeal Leftovers

You can meal-prep this oatmeal and make it at the beginning of the week. Cover it with plastic wrap or scoop it into an airtight container and keep it in the refrigerator. They will last about four days.

To reheat, scoop into a bowl and microwave until warm.

Customizations of Baked Oatmeal

You can use the same base recipe and customize it each time with these different choices.

  • Milk: To make this dish dairy-free, you can use any kind of milk in this recipe, from whole milk to soy or almond milk.
  • Add-ins: This dish can be used in endless flavor combinations, from classic maple and brown sugar to chocolate peanut butter to mixed berry oatmeal. For more texture variation, throw in some chocolate chips, walnuts, or raisins.
  • Serving: One way to serve baked oatmeal is to pour milk of your choice over the warm oatmeal and then top with maple syrup, honey, caramel sauce, chocolate sauce, or whipped cream. Adding a warm fruit sauce, like blueberry or strawberry, would also be a delicious option. Apple butter would be delightful on this one.

  1. Hello! Can this recipe be made with a sugar alternative like honey or maple syrup? If so, how much would I use?

    1. Yes, I would say maple syrup would be your best bet just give the mass of the recipe and I would start with 1/2 cup. You can always add more as a topping if desired.
