Cinco de Mayo is a Mexican holiday celebrated on May 5th that commemorates the Mexican Army’s victory over the French Empire at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. The holiday is often mistaken for Mexican Independence Day, which is actually celebrated on September 16th.
Cinco de Mayo is a day of cultural pride and heritage for many Mexicans and Mexican-Americans. It is marked by parades, mariachi music, traditional Mexican foods, and drinks like tacos, guacamole, and margaritas. Many cities with large Mexican populations, such as Los Angeles, Chicago, and Houston, host large Cinco de Mayo festivals and celebrations.
While not as widely celebrated in Mexico as in the United States, Cinco de Mayo has become an important celebration of Mexican-American culture and community. It serves as a reminder of Mexico’s determination to defend its sovereignty against foreign aggression.
